Flag of British Antarctic Territory - Proportions 1:2

BRITISH ANTARCTIC TERRITORY
- Proportions 1:2 - Flag and ensign of the research station and their vessels

Adopted 21 April 1998. This ensign is flown by Natural Environment Research Council vessels engaged on British Antarctic survey work. The ensign features the only use of a white field with the Union Jack in the canton. The arms were granted to the 'Falkland Islands' Dependencies on 11 March 1952 and with the crest added in 1963 they were assigned to the new colony. The torch is a symbol of exploration; the white field with wavy blue stripes is the ice-covered land and the Antarctic waters. The shield is supported by the British lion and a penguin which represents the local fauna. The crest shows the research ship 'Discovery'.
