Introduced 20 May 1794, uninterrupted use
since 5 March 1848. The colours of the French national flag, known as
the Tricolore, were introduced during the French Revolution when
the King added the royal white cockade of the House of Bourbon to the
revolutionary cockade of blue and red (the livery colours of
Paris).
